Introducing the Hakuchou (Snow Goose) Japanese Cherry Blossom Seedling, a stunning ornamental tree that produces clusters of snow white blossoms with long tassel anthers every spring. As the flowers mature, the stamens become shades of pink, creating a beautiful contrast against the pure white petals. The Hakuchou is a cross between the Oshima cherry and the Fuji cherry, both direct descendants of the Japanese native Oshima cherry.
This specimen tree is a popular choice among homeowners and landscapers alike and can be seen in the gardens of some of the finest Georgetown, Alexandria, and Capitol Hill row homes. It is an excellent choice for lining driveways, parkways, walkways, or property lines, and is ideal for street planting within tight, narrow locations.
Japanese Hakuchou cherry trees can be found in memorial gardens throughout the United States, symbolizing the purity of life, connection, strength, and ancestry. The Hakuchou is known to represent spiritual enlightenment that lies beyond the north wind.
The Hakuchou can grow up to 25 feet tall with an upright growth that spreads to about 15 feet as it matures. This hardy, disease and insect-resistant variety is more tolerant of urban pollution than other Japanese ornamentals, making it an ideal choice for city dwellers. The tree is suitable for most soil types, but requires well-draining soil and does not tolerate constant water logging. Planting on a hill with a slight slope is fine. Many landscapers prefer to create a mound in flat table locations and place the Hakuchou on top.
