The First Lady Taft Silk Cherry Blossom Scarf is inspired by springtime in Washington and the enduring story behind the city's cherry blossoms. In the early twentieth century, the people of Tokyo offered cherry trees to the United States as a gesture of friendship. After an initial shipment was found to be diseased and had to be destroyed, Tokyo sent a second, healthy gift of 3,020 trees, which arrived in 1912.
On March 27, 1912, First Lady Helen Herron Taft joined Viscountess Iwa Chinda, the wife of Japan's ambassador, to plant the first two cherry trees along the Tidal Basin, marking the beginning of a tradition that would become one of Washington's most beloved signs of renewal each spring.
This scarf captures that sense of beauty and friendship in a wearable keepsake. Soft pink blossoms frame the White House in bloom, evoking the brief and luminous season when history and nature meet in quiet harmony. Crafted in pure silk, it is designed to be worn or kept as a reminder of Washington's springtime tradition and the international gift that helped shape it.
