Constantino Brumidi was hired to paint in the Capitol during the mid-19th century extension project, which added the present House and Senate wings and the cast-iron dome. Brumidiís classical training in Rome gave him a thorough understanding of Renaissance and Baroque styles, symbols, and techniques of wall painting. At the Capitol, he combined these classical elements with subjects from American history and technology.
